First off, let me apologize for the wall of text on today's comic. There was a lot of material that needed to be explained, and I could not see how to do it without having John speaking a lot.
Lisa is in the police station interrogation room. On Episode 265, you saw her through the one-way window, which from this side looks completely black. Erik is no longer behind the window. He is up front with Mabel while John, as potential lawyer, goes in.
A lawyer can represent family, but the American Bar Association (which despite having the word "bar" in its name, regulates lawyers, not alcohol dispensers) Model Rule 1.7 prohibits representation if a conflict of interest is created. In this case, John can't represent Lisa if that would compromise Erik, so he wants to know if Erik is innocent before they begin. Also, a lawyer has to be very careful of what is said in casual conversation, because if they appear to give advice, they could enter into a into lawyer-client relationship by accident. That's the reason he doesn't allow Lisa to speak until he has decided to represent her.
There are other legal gray areas in this case, and a couple will be seen later. Others, we will ignore because this is, uh... How do they call it? Ah, Fiction.
This episode marks the beginning of the end. It took a long time, but we are now heading towards the scene portrayed on the cover of Season 3. I'm not sure how many episodes I have left, because there have been some changes to the original script, but the Case of the Dangerouns Blonde is heading towards it conclusion.
